Summary

'Are you happy in your life?'
Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious。 Before he awakes to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits。 Before the man he's never met smiles down at him and says, 'Welcome back。 '

In this world he's woken up to, Jason's life is not the one he knows。 His wife is not his wife。 His son was never born。 And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable。 Something impossible。

Is it this world or the other that's the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could've imagined - one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe。

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human - a relentlessly surprising thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we'll go to claim the lives we dream of。

Typically not a sci-fi fan but Dark Matter sat well with me。 I could not put it down! Do yourself a favor, read it, but don’t read it at 3am。 Your Google algorithm is going to be completely messed up!!!

3。5 stars rounded upWell I was able to predict what the fuck was going on after 10% of the book when the MC figured it out in 40%。 It drove me insane。 Besides that, after the 40% threshold, I pretty enjoyed this book。 I couldn’t put it down。 The writing is nothing special tho。 Kinda feels like a Young Adult book, tbh。 If you enjoyed Midnight Library, I’m sure you’d like this one。 It has a similar concept。 Regrets。 Choices。 That sort of thing。

Wtf did I just read 😅Honestly amazing。 Had to google a lot of words and theories regarding quantum physics and parallel universes (Schrodinger amirite?) But a really interesting concept and makes you question some real deep philosophical questions while maintaining a great science-fiction story。 Honestly some parts of this book were too smart for me but I enjoyed it nevertheless。

This was a super original story and it immediately started really exciting。 The whole world building was so interesting and I definitely couldn't stop reading。There are no real slow moments in my opinion which was great because the chapters are quite long。 The characters could've been described a little more in detail though。4 out of 5 stars! Because in the way the mechanism of the box was explained, I think that the original Jason was supposed to enter the corridor and choose a door。 But what happened to him was that he just woke up in Jason 2's world。 Doesn't make sense and ruins the story because so much of it's focus is finding the right door。 2) Why Jason 2 didn't encounter the same problem with the doplegangers? It was implied that he too had to search out the world that he wanted so why were there not other versions that found that same world? 。。。more

I’ve read books with mentions of different lives resulting from different choices, but never to the scale of this book。 The thought that every choice could make a branch in reality is mind bending。 The number of possibilities for your life are endless and I enjoyed his postscript dedicating the book to anyone who wondered where there life would be if they had chosen a different path。 Chloe, I didn’t think it was too sci-fi-ee, there was a lot about family, and adventure。 I’m not sure I would rec I’ve read books with mentions of different lives resulting from different choices, but never to the scale of this book。 The thought that every choice could make a branch in reality is mind bending。 The number of possibilities for your life are endless and I enjoyed his postscript dedicating the book to anyone who wondered where there life would be if they had chosen a different path。 Chloe, I didn’t think it was too sci-fi-ee, there was a lot about family, and adventure。 I’m not sure I would recommend it out of the blue, but since you’ve thought about reading it, I don’t think you’d regret it! For someone that wasn't a go-to thriller type of reader Crouch has captivated my imagination。 The characters are fairly well fleshed, the defining aspect for me however is the giant scope of his ideas。 When I reached a twist it was as if I saw it coming but deliberately ignored it until it was too big to miss。 Well worth a quick read! Nowhere near as good as Recursion。 The science is less well developed, the emotional relationship between the protagonist and his wife not as moving, and the story a lot less gripping。 On the whole, it feels like a much thinner book (in terms of substance, not the number of pages)。 The pace is very slow at the beginning。 The reader easily grasps what takes Jason many chapters—that his assailant is his own self from an alternate multiverse。 (view spoiler)[I found the various worlds that he enters Nowhere near as good as Recursion。 The science is less well developed, the emotional relationship between the protagonist and his wife not as moving, and the story a lot less gripping。 On the whole, it feels like a much thinner book (in terms of substance, not the number of pages)。 The pace is very slow at the beginning。 The reader easily grasps what takes Jason many chapters—that his assailant is his own self from an alternate multiverse。 (view spoiler)[I found the various worlds that he enters tedious to read。 Unlike Recursion, where the many iteratives of the characters’ lives were engrossing to read, the worlds that Jason enters feels simply functional—just to show us that he has to make many attempts before finding the correct one。 The pace only improves when Jason starts encountering other versions of himself—the Jasons from the multiple branches that split off from the original one where he was abducted by Jason2 (his original doppelganger)。 The ending was also less than satisfactory。 So Jason manages to reunite with his wife and son and they make their escape into some random world where none of the other Jasons can find them。 But there is already an infinite number of Jasons roaming the worlds, not to mention that in Jason2’s world (and a good number of others), the technology to travel the multiverse still exists。 That means loads more people could be doing what the Jasons were doing。 Jason and family may have escaped his murderous doppelgangers, but they have left the multiverse in chaos! I honestly don’t have the words for this one。 What an absolutely riveting, wild ride of a book。 I absolutely devoured this in a couple of days。 This is a fast-paced, sci fi exploration of what would happen if you had the chance to re-do your regrets, and what would happen if multiple possibilities/dimensions conflicted。 Thoroughly mind-blowing, would totally recommend。 Exceptional。

How many versions of me are there? Is one of them writing a different review of this book?! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’m a bit of a sucker for multiverse/alternate perspective science fiction narratives, so this easily roped me along。 I wouldn’t say it was the most compelling read emotionally。 The characters did feel a little bit flat at times, with most of the action coming from Jason’s inner monologue。 Overall, very solid sci-fi thriller that i would recommend to anyone who liked movies like Interstellar and even Inception

The beginning was a little slow, but the part where he is trying to find his way back, and the solution of choice was really thought provoking。But it is something quite similar to other books。 If you already read Midnight library, then you will see a similar train of thought。

Read on a recommendation of a more scifi version of Michael Crichton。 Was very good。 Would give 4。5 stars if I could but I'll err on the positive。 Such a cool concept and well executed。 A couple of things were apparent possibly a chapter before they happened but that's fine。 Loved the story and wish on some level there was more exploration but it would have taken away from the narrative。 Read on a recommendation of a more scifi version of Michael Crichton。 Was very good。 Would give 4。5 stars if I could but I'll err on the positive。 Such a cool concept and well executed。 A couple of things were apparent possibly a chapter before they happened but that's fine。 Loved the story and wish on some level there was more exploration but it would have taken away from the narrative。 。。。more
